Migration, Multiculturalism and Contemporary Childhoods

16 Apr 2013

A conference and networking event at UCC on Saturday 27 April is set to focus on the increase in migration into Ireland since the late 1990s.

This increase in migration means that racial, cultural and linguistic diversity are now an integral part of growing up in Ireland.

During this one-day event funded by the Irish Research Council, the level that Ireland’s increasing diversity is reflected in the lives of children will be under discussion. Topical questions include:

  • How is bilingualism accommodated?
  • How can children learn about and share their cultural identity in schools and through community activities?
  • Does reading material for children reflect cultural diversity?
  • How can schools be more inclusive? Are cultural and arts organisations engaging with children from diverse backgrounds?

Speakers from Ireland, Spain, Canada and the UK will present research on these topics, and all participants are invited to join in the discussion and share their experience and expertise, whether as educators, parents, arts practitioners or community representatives. Participation is limited to 40 places.
