Jazzing it up with POD
UCC will host a special concert for alumni, visitors and friends as part of the Gathering Ireland 2013 and the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival on Sunday 27 October.
Taking place at 3pm in Devere Hall (Student Centre), an exciting new band called POD will play the compositions of Paul O’Donnell, Head of Jazz and Popular Music at UCC, with high energy rhythms and a fusion of jazz, pop, Celtic, Latin and world music elements.
Legendary Irish musician and composer, Mícheál O Súilleabháin has said of POD, “Paul O’Donnell brings a band together that sizzles. Cork has been building towards something like this for the past three decades, and the music energy at UCC is central to its emergence."
With core magical musicians such as Niwel Tsumbu on guitar and Oleg Ponomarev on violin and with guest musicians such as Cora Venus Lunny and Mel Mercier, O Súilleabháin says “It is more like a nomadic global experimental jazz school."
Well known as the primary creative force behind the emergence of jazz and popular music studies at UCC, Paul O'Donnell is an experienced and highly respected performer and improviser in the jazz idiom. He is a regular performer at music festivals at home and abroad, and he has worked with many leading jazz musicians, including Alan Skidmore, Grant Stewart, Jon Faddis, Bobby Watson and Kenny Davern.
Caroline Waters, Alumni Relations Office encourages alumni living locally and those visiting Cork for the week-end of the 27 October to kick-off the Sunday of the bank holiday week-end with Jazz at UCC.
Tickets for the concert cost €10. Book early and enjoy a free guided tour of UCC’s historic campus. Tour departs from the UCC Visitor’s Centre at 2pm. Club Áras Bar, Devere Hall will open from 2pm selling a light lunch and beverages.
