International crime on agenda at CCJHR

12 Feb 2013
Philippe Sands QC is Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals at University College London. He is a member of Matrix Chambers.

Professor Philippe Sands will deliver the 7th Annual Distinguished Lecture of the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights on Wednesday 13 February at UCC.

'The Origin of International Crime: A Personal History' will take place in the Aula Maxima from 6-7.30pm, and will be chaired by Joe Noonan of Noonan Linehan Carroll Coffey Solicitors.

The development of international criminal justice, from the Nuremburg trials to the trials of Karadzic, Taylor and Pinochet, has changed the course of history in the 20th and early part of the 21st century. Professor Sands is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading experts in international criminal and human rights law. He has been personally involved in several leading international cases, before the UK courts, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Justice. His most recent book, Torture Team, has been critically acclaimed by several leading publications.

Professor Siobhán Mullally, Director of the CCJHR says: “This is a unique opportunity to hear first hand how international law has worked to combat impunity for international crimes.  Professor Sands is one of the most distinguished human rights lawyers in the world today. More than any other lawyer, he has contributed to exposing the corruption of power at the most senior levels of the Bush administration that led ultimately to the issuing of the infamous 'torture memos”.

Admission is free and all are welcome. For further queries, contact Professor Siobhán Mullally at s.mullally@ucc.ie
