The public can handle ancient fossils, meet slithering reptiles and marvel at carnivorous plants when the School of BEES throws open its doors for Culture Night 2013 on 20 September.

This is the first year that BEES has participated in Culture Night and visitors will get a chance to see some unique animal specimens, collected by Charles Darwin himself during his famous voyage aboard the Beagle. The School of BEES is located on the Distillery Fields Campus, a short distance from the main UCC campus on Western Road.

With exhibits from animal, geology and plant collections, and interactive games and experiments there will be something for everyone. A team of science researchers will be on hand to answer questions – why not find out about the science happening in your city? Tours of the school will also be happening at 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00 on September 20th.

BEES Culture Night organiser and 2013 Famelab Winner Fergus McAuliffe says there will be lots to see during the family-friendly event: "Starting at the historic Cooperage building, once part of a whisky distillery, visitors can tour our geology garden, wind turbine, fish ponds, greenhouses and laboratories. They can also try their hand at some experiments and step back in time while browsing the exhibits of our natural history museum and dinosaur fossils."

Throughout Culture Night BEES staff and students will be giving rapid-fire talks and showing short films about our environment and the world-leading research going on at BEES.

”We have a long tradition in outreach in BEES, but this is our first step in inviting people to our workplace where they can see and experience the wonderful world of BEES disciplines that we enjoy every day” said Professor John O’Halloran Head of BEES in welcoming the opening up of the School for cultural night.
