UCC Symposium seeks to transform the challenges facing Ireland

The Irish Social Sciences Symposium comes amidst the fallout of recent events in Ireland, including the Ryan Report and the Mahon Tribunal, as well as the decline of the Celtic Tiger. Hosted by the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21) at UCC, the event aims to highlight the role those working in the area of social science can play in ensuring the Irish nation continues to flourish.
Recent research relating to housing, governance, emigration, sustainability and politics will be presented and explored, as well as a focus on the economy, gender and the media.
Dr Linda Connolly, Director of ISS21 and organizer of the event, says, “The crises facing Ireland have led to a search for new understandings of both the economic and socio-cultural roots of the current ‘crisis’ or ‘crises’ in Ireland, and for innovative solutions and creative thinking among public intellectuals.”
Speakers include:
- Professor Peadar Kirby on the distinctiveness of Ireland’s development
- Dr Piaras MacEinri on the challenge posted by contemporary emigration
- Fiona Buckley, who is a member of the 5050 Equal Political Representation group, on gender and politics
- Professor Rob Kitchin, author of the Ireland after Nama blog, and of groundbreaking research on ghost estates in Ireland
The Symposium will take place at 2pm in the CACCSS Seminar Room, O’Rahilly Building, UCC.
