UCC Lecturer honoured by Harvard

Dr Eleanor Doyle, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Head, School of Economics, UCC has been elected into the ‘Hall of Fame’ of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School.  Dr Doyle is only the sixth person to receive this honour.

The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness was founded by Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School when he decided to enhance and internationalise his renowned course on Microeconomics of Competitiveness by teaching it in collaboration with a network of invited international academics at Universities across the world.  Dr Eleanor Doyle and Professor Connell Fanning, School of Ecnomics UCC were among the initial invitees.  By 2011 this network of affiliated academics and universities expanded to cover more than 90 universities around the world.

Dr Doyle’s immense contributions include developing the NUI Certificate in Achieving Competitiveness at UCC, contributing the Irish section to the annual Global Competitiveness Report which is grounded in Professor Porter‘s competitiveness concepts, attending teaching and learning seminars annually, presenting at research seminars at Harvard Business School and currently developing an Institute for Business Development and Competitiveness at UCC. 

UCC’s engagement with Porter began with a major public event at the University in 2000 hosted by the Southern Chapter of the MBA Association of Ireland and UCC’s Department of Economics. The on-going links have been developed with Professor Porter and the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School by the School of Economics.  Professor Connell Fanning, Head, School of Economics at UCC congratulating Dr Doyle on the prestigious award said “it is an outstanding achievement for Dr Doyle and UCC that Professor Porter and the Institute have acknowledged Dr Doyle’s contribution to the network over its first decade by welcoming her into its Hall of Fame.”

Dr Doyle joins recipients Professor Torger Reve, BI Norwegian Business School, Norway; Professor Philippe Gugler, University of Freiburg, Switzerland; Dr Zbigniew Bochniartz, University of Washington, USA; Professor Yoko Ishikura, Hitotsubashi University, Japan and Professor Jorge Forteza, San Andres University, Argentina.
