Mel Mercier nominated for Irish Times Theatre Award

Head of UCC School of Music and Theatre, Dr Mel Mercier has been nominated for a prestigious Irish Time Theatre Award, in the category Best Designer: Sound, for music he composed for the play Sétanta.

His original music for the play has been widely acclaimed as an essential and outstanding feature of the production. The play was written and directed by Paul Mercier and attended by President Michael D. Higgins on the Opening Night at the Abbey Theatre in December.

Mel has been writing music for theatre for 15 years. He has composed the music for many critically acclaimed, international award-winning productions that have been presented on the stages of the National Theatres of Ireland, the UK and France, and on the West End and Broadway.

He collaborates often with two of the world’s most respected theatre practitioners - director Deborah Warner and Cork-born actor Fiona Shaw. He has also composed music for several productions by the Cork theatre company, Corcadorca, including The Winter's Tale at Cork Opera House in 2010.

Mel is Head of the School of Music and Theatre at University College Cork. He is artistic director of the innovative FUAIM Music at UCC series and musical director of the critically-acclaimed music ensemble TRASNA.
