Cloud computing holds untold promise, yet legal issues in this rapidly expanding sector abound. An upcoming conference at UCC will address many of these concerns.

The conference, which is organised by the Faculty of Law, UCC in association with UCC’s Masters in Law (LLM) in Intellectual Property and E-Law, will take place on Friday 16 November 2012 from 2.00-5.15pm in room G10, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.

Cloud computing, defined as the internet-based delivery of IT services, is a growth industry and many Irish businesses are operating as either providers of cloud services or as clients. This conference will discuss the regulation of cloud computing, including:

Speakers at this conference will include Professor Ian Walden of Queen Mary, University of London, who is Professor of Information and Communications Law and Head of the Institute of Computer and Communications Law in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies. He is a member of the Cloud Legal Project which is one of the leading centres for research on cloud computing and the law.

The conference will also be addressed by Mr John O'Connor, Head of the Technology and Commercial Contracts Group at Matheson Solicitors, Dublin and Ms Síofra Flood, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at Swrve, a high-growth start up providing a platform for in-game and in-application analytics.

Speaking in advance of the conference, Professor Maeve McDonagh of the Faculty of Law at UCC says: "We are delighted to host this event as it highlights the important role of law in this area and also as we are involved in on-going interdisciplinary co-operation in the field with colleagues in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Business Information Systems at UCC."

Dr Darius Whelan, Faculty of Law at UCC, comments on the relationship between the conference and the Master’s programme in Intellectual Property and E-Law: “UCC has been providing legal education on issues such as electronic commerce, internet regulation, data protection and cybercrime for many years. This conference will be a significant opportunity for discussion of the highly topical issue of regulation of cloud computing between representatives from the legal professions, academia and industry. This will be particularly beneficial for our Master’s students, who need to be familiar with the differing perspectives on these areas in order to further understand the legal issues and to be better prepared for their future careers.”
