UCC Graduate Receives Lifetime Achievement Award for Spinal Surgery

Dr Patrick F. O’Leary, a spinal surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, and graduate of Medicine at University College Cork (UCC), has earned a lifetime achievement award.

 

The award was presented at the 29th Annual Tribute Dinner of the HSS recently, at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. The HSS is a word leader in orthopedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation. 

A 1968 graduate of the School of Medicine at UCC, Dr O’Leary is regarded as a leading surgeon globally by many of his peers. He is a specialist in disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He helped co-develop the Spine Section in Biomechanics in 1990 and establish the Biomechanics Fellowship at HSS in 1991.

Dr O’Leary holds a special interest in the area of surgical technology and advances in surgical technique, and treats patients ranging from professional athletes to laypersons that travel from around the world. He collaborates continuously with colleagues in the United States and Europe.

Dr Thomas P. Sculco, surgeon-in-chief at HSS, said,“Dr O'Leary’s incredible skill and dedication to his patients have made him a leader at HSS and in international spine surgery. His work has improved surgical techniques and patient care and led to great advances.”
