Professor Tony Ryan of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at University College Cork (UCC) is to be recognized at the National Awards for Excellence in Teaching in September.

The awards are administered by the National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching & Learning (NAIRTL). They single out higher education teachers from a number of Irish institutions, who demonstrate outstanding dedication to their teaching and have made an exceptional impact on student learning.

Professor Ryan is also a Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital. He was one of the first graduates of the Master’s Degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, a programme run by Ionad Bairre, the Teaching and Learning Centre in UCC.

Previous teaching-related awards received by Professor Ryan include the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in UCC (2002) and two Irish Health Awards (2009). He was a partner in the multi-disciplinary NAIRTL-funded Irish Integrative Learning Project (2009) and has more than 100 peer reviewed research publications, both clinical and educational.

The ceremony will be held in Dublin Castle on 17 September 2012 and the Awards will be presented by Mr Sean Ó Foghlú, Secretary General of the Department of Education and Skills.
