Dr James Reilly, Minister for Health, has welcomed the announcement by UCC that it will be adding a new Professorship in General Practice to its team of medical experts.

This professorial post which will be based in St  Mary’s Health Campus on Cork’s Northside will undertake clinical care, joint research projects and initiatives aimed at developing and improving primary care.  The Professor will be based at a new primary care centre planned for St. Mary’s Health Campus on Cork’s North side.  Minister Reilly stated “The post will lead the development of primary care services so that they become the cornerstone of care and preventive services for communities in the Southern region. The Professor of General Practice will work with GPs but also with the full range of health care professionals which a high-performing health system requires. This post will particularly focus on improving the health status of communities living on the North side of Cork City.”

President Michael Murphy of UCC said that the post will “complement the already existing professorship of general practice and will undertake research, policy and strategy developments as they relate to education, training, quality and service improvements in primary care. We are delighted that the Professor will be based on the St. Mary’s Health Campus.   This strengthens UCC’s commitment to the north side of Cork City”.  He added “We anticipate shortly being able to make further announcements of major UCC developments on the St. Mary’s Health Campus”.

Professor John Higgins, Head of the College of Medicine & Health at UCC and Chair of the Reconfiguration Forum welcomed the appointment “This post represents another example of the close ties between UCC and HSE South.  By integrating clinical services with teaching and research we can improve the quality of life for our patients. The Professor of General Practice will advance research initiatives and apply those discoveries and techniques in the health system in as fast a time as possible.”
