Having recently joined forces with the Granary Theatre, the Gaiety School of Acting (Cork) will be hosting a series of free one-hour drama workshops at the Granary throughout Culture Night.
Now in its seventh year, Culture Night 2012 will see organisations and regional authorities across Ireland pull out all the stops to produce an unforgettable evening of free cultural events for people of all ages. Cork City alone has over 80 separate venues ready to welcome those with a thirst for something different on a Friday night. Several members of staff at UCC are involved.
Some of the cultural delights on offer from Cork and UCC include:
A fine view at UCC Visitors’ Centre: From 8-9.30pm, members of the public can join a tour starting at the Visitors' Centre, taking in a brief visit to the Ogam Stones Collection and leading on to a tour of the Crawford Observatory - the only functional Observatory in any Irish university. Visitors are welcome to have their names translated into Ogam as part of the visit.
Welcoming any potential visitors, Head of UCC Visitors’ Centre, JP Quinn, says, “UCC is delighted to welcome visitors as part of Cork Culture Night and we encourage them to take part in the many events taking place around campus.”
Life through a lens at Cork Airport: The Carrigaline Photographic Society will exhibit their work at Cork Airport. Insights is an exhibition that will communicate emotions, ideas and inspiration to the viewer, without words. The exhibition officially opens at 6.30pm on Culture Night and will run until 12 October. Professor Colin Bradley, Head of the Department of General Practice, is a member of the group.
Hit the right notes with the Cork Chamber Choir: The Cork Chamber Choir will bring their own special style of music to St. Luke’s Church (St. Luke’s Cross, Summer Hill North) from 7-8pm. Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of College of Science, Engineering and Food Science at UCC, will join fellow members of the choir for what promises to be a splendid musical treat.
Nothing sketchy at The Glucksman Gallery: Want to draw on easels? On the floor? On the architecture? On people? Go right ahead. The Gallery will be transformed after hours, as the entire building becomes a live sketchbook. The events run from 5-10pm, with artists on hand to advise modern day Monets. Games and art making are also available for all the family.
Go to the flicks with Film Studies at UCC: In collaboration with the Schull Fastnet Short Film Festival, a packed programme of the best of regionally produced short films is on offer. It will run in Boole 4, UCC, from 6-8pm (18years+).
A different view at The Honan Chapel: Open from 8-11pm, the public can inspect the mosaic floor, Harry Clarke stained glass windows and other elements from the Honan Collection.
History for Supper at the Masonic Hall: An event to suit both history and music buffs alike will take place from 7-9pm at the home of Freemasonry in Cork (27 Tuckey Street). Co-ordinated by Dr David Butler of the Department of Geography at UCC, experts will be on site to answer questions about the history of the building, and a book sale in aid of local charities will take place in The Supper Room. Classical music will filter through the building on the night, performed on manual and pedal reed organs.
Be seen and heard thanks to the UCC School of Music and Theatre: Presented by FUAIM: Music and Community, the ‘Lifesounds Ensemble’ includes UCC School of Music and Theatre students, older adults from Ard na Rí day centre, and local youth rappers. It will run from 6-7pm at Ó Riada Hall, Sunday’s Well, and it also features several local musicians and artists, including Danny McCarthy, Garry McCarthy, Harry Moore, Eva McMullen, Margaret O’Sullivan and Inma Moya Pavon.

Classes will run every hour, on the hour, from 5pm for kids, and from 7pm for adults.
Transport is taken care of, with a free Culture Bus operating from multiple locations across the city, including UCC (Western Road). On-board musicians will even serenade passengers as they travel between destinations.
