UCC recently honoured five Irish sports stars with honorary doctorates. Caoimhe Normile, a star in her own right, was around on the day to meet her rugby hero, Ronan O’Gara.

 

One of only three students in the country who attained 9 AIs in the Leaving Certificate, Caoimhe, a native of Tarbert, Co. Kerry, has opted to study Medicine at UCC.

“I looked around at other campuses in Ireland”, said Caoimhe, “but UCC was the one that had most going for it. My sister Laura is already studying Law and French in UCC and she loves it here. I am really looking forward to starting my course.”

But it isn’t a case of all work and no play for Caoimhe. While studying for the Leaving Cert, she kept up her interest in all sports – she is a keen swimmer – and, an avid Munster fan, never missed a rugby match at Thomond Park on Friday or Saturday nights. 

“It was fabulous to meet with Ronan and to see all the other sports stars in all their glory.” says Caoimhe. "New students were arriving for orientation on the day and there was a fantastic buzz on campus.” 

Caoimhe looks forward to starting her course in Medicine and will also avail of the opportunity to participate in UCC’s vast array of extra-curricular activities.
