Congratulations to UCC Medical student, Fred English on winning this year's Health Research Board Watts Medal.
The Watts Medal is a national award from by the Health Research Board (HRB) for medical research carried out with HRB funding. Fred, who is a member of Professor Louise Kenny's group at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, UCC, has made a ground breaking discovery in the search for a cure for pre-eclampsia which is the leading cause of maternal and neonatal death globally. Fred's research is the first in the world to show in vivo that inhibiting a particular enzyme called PARP could prevent the development and onset of this disease. The research holds genuine promise as a new therapy for pre-eclampsia. More details on HRB studentships and be found on www.hrb.ie
