Two UCC students were recognised for academic excellence by President Mary McAleese at the Undergraduate Awards Ceremony of Ireland & Northern Ireland held recently at Dublin Castle.
Maeve Butler, of Ballingarry, Co. Limerick, won the Psychology category for her essay titled: “We seem to have lost our psychology – The Identity Crisis and Role Revival of Educational Psychology.” Having recently graduated from UCC with a 1:1 degree in Applied Psychology, Maeve is currently studying at the University of Edinburgh for an MSc in Psychological Practice for Children and Young People.
Roslyn Steer, originally from Dublin, now living in Cork city, won the Modern Cultural Studies category for her essay titled: “The Influence of Music on Modernist Literature.” Roslyn graduated from her BA in Music & Irish at UCC in September 2011 and is now studying an MA in Music & Cultural History also at UCC.
There were 2,381 submissions to the 2011 Undergraduate Awards programme of which 237 were shortlisted. Of these 237, 23 winners were selected. UCC had 22 students in the shortlist.

The Undergraduate Awards of
Ireland & Northern Ireland were founded in 2008 by two Trinity graduates,
Oisin Hanrahan and Paddy Cosgrave, the Undergraduate Awards programme is open
to students in their final or penultimate year on a degree course from every
third level institution on the island of Ireland as well as a selection of top
universities in the UK, Canada and the USA. Corrected coursework that has achieved a high
2.1 grade or above can be entered into the 2012 programme from mid-November on
the website: www.undergraduateawards.com
