'From theory to practice in International Development' is the theme of a seminar taking place in UCC on Friday, November 4th. The event will highlight the work of UCC’s students of BSc in International Development and Food Policy who undertake a 6-month developing world internship in the third year of their degree programme. 

The event, organised by the Department of Food Business & Development, UCC, will run from 11.30am-4pm with the afternoon seminar focusing on the students’ work which has taken them to a diverse range of different organisations in countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Palestine, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia with organisations including Africa Direct, CPALI, Gorta, Self Help Africa, Trocaire and the Hope Foundation.

The students’ programme addresses key international development challenges including:

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy will deliver the Welcome Address while the Opening Address will be given by Seán Sherlock TD (Minister of State, Department of Enterprise, Jobs & Innovation and Department of Education & Skills). The Keynote Address will be given by Mr Ray Jordan, CEO, Self Help Africa and H.E. Ms Catherine Muigai Mwangi, Kenyan Ambassador to Ireland will close the proceedings.

 “The seminar is an opportunity for development organisations, educational institutions and policy makers to interact directly with the next generation of Irish development professionals, affording an insight into their experiences of the opportunities and challenges facing development practitioners”, said Nora Hennessy, Department of Food Business & Development, UCC.
