10.01.2011

University College Cork (UCC) will celebrate the establishment of its new School of Music and Theatre and the launch of the third FUAIM season of concerts, seminars and performance projects with a special concert Duets on Sunday, January 16th next in the Aula Maxima, UCC at 8pm. The profile of the performing arts at UCC was elevated recently when the Department of Music joined with Drama and Theatre Studies to form the School of Music and Theatre.
Duets will bring together some of the most innovative Irish theatre and music artists to herald the launch of the School and project its vision of cross-arts innovation in artistic practice, research and education.  This special concert celebrates the creative relationship between music and theatre and features excerpts from Gare St Lazare Players' MOBY DICK with Conor Lovett and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh,  and Raymond Scannell's MIMIC.  In addition, Duets presents a newly devised music-theatre piece created by two of the most innovative artists in Irish theatre and music; actor and theatre director Mikel Murfi and singer-songwriter Julie Feeney

The third FUAIM Season follows on from the huge success of previous seasons and features leading musicians from Ireland and abroad.  The  FUAIM line-up includes Duke Special, who will perform with the UCC Gamelan in a special concert at the Cork Opera House, Martin Hayes, Gemma Hayes, Andy Irvine and The RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, to name but a few.

In 2011 the School of Music and Theatre will also celebrate the legacy of one of the central figures in the history of Irish music, Seán Ó Riada.  Born in 1931, Ó Riada studied music at UCC and subsequently lectured in the Department of Music until his death in 1971.  He made an extraordinary contribution to Irish musical life and the School is proud to mark the 40th anniversary of his death in a series of special events,  including the world premiere of Ó Riada Room,  composed by concertina virtuoso Niall Vallely to be performed by him and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet.

All thirty events in the FUAIM season are open to the public and admission to twenty-eight of those is free.  Limited number of tickets available for Duets Concert.  To book: email UCCMUSICANDTHEATRE@GMAIL.COM  See http://www.music.ucc.ie or FUAIM brochure for full details.
