Raise & Give Week at UCC
14.02.2011

The UCC Students Union will host its annual Raise & Give Week from Monday, February 14th to Friday, February 18th 2011. Raise & Give Week is a traditional part of the student experience and contains a wide range of entertainments and activities for the enjoyment of students whilst at the same time raising money for charity. This year, Raise & Give Week kicks off on Valentine’s Day and this is reflected in many of the student events and activities on the day.

The main purpose of Raise & Give Week is to raise funds for charities.  A number of worthy charitable causes have benefitted to the tune of tens of thousands of euro raised by UCC students over the years.  This year the three charities to benefit from Raise & Give Week are: Hope Foundation – Street Children of Calcutta, Horgans Buildings Senior Citizens Centre and the UCC Student Hardship Fund.

Over 100 events are planned including live music showcasing UCC bands and comedy acts.  Student activities range from head shaving to pillow fighting in the amphitheatre.  The RubberBandits are scheduled to play in Devere Hall on Tuesday evening (15th).

The Students Union have taken a number of initiatives, in consultation with University Management and An Garda Síochana to ensure that Raise & Give Week is incident free.  “The Students Union are to be commended for their work for Raise & Give Week. The measures adopted in 2010 greatly contributed to allaying residents’ fears and student patrols which proved so successful last year will again be a feature this year”, explained Con O’Brien. He concluded: “Raise & Give Week is a wonderful opportunity for students to have some fun and should be enjoyed by all in the proper spirit while giving something back to the community.”
