President Mary McAleese will celebrate her last official visit to Cork as Uachtarán na hÉireann with a visit to UCC and the Glucksman Gallery today (Monday, October 10th 2011). President McAleese will be greeted by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy. The distinguished gathering will include the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Terry Shannon and County Mayor, Tim Lombard along with representatives of the academic, political & business communities.

During the course of her visit, the President will view one of the major medieval Irish manuscripts, the Book of Lismore, currently on display in the Glucksman,  She will also have the opportunity to meet student representatives and staff at the event.

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy said it was an honour for the university to host President McAleese’s farewell visit to Cork.  “It is fitting that the President marks her departure with a visit to the Glucksman Gallery which she opened officially in 2004 and revisited following the flood of 2009.  I take this opportunity to offer the President my very best wishes for the future.”

The Lewis Glucksman Gallery at UCC is named in honour of Dr Lewis Glucksman who had a long and successful career in investment banking. The Gallery is an international award-winning building and includes display spaces, lecture facilities, a riverside restaurant and gallery shop.  Under the direction of Fiona Kearney, the Gallery aims to promote research, creation and exploration of the visual arts for UCC and the region as a whole.
