International award for Tyndall spinout
07.10.2011

InfiniLED Limited, a spinout from Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork (UCC), has won the International Technology Leadership Group University Challenge.  Congratulating InfiniLED on their success, Professor Roger Whatmore, Tyndall CEO said: “This is a really excellent win for the InfinLED founders, Bill Henry and Joe O’Keefe.  It brings with it a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase the company’s technology in Silicon Valley at the Annual ITLG - Irish Times Innovation Awards event at Stanford University to be held in Spring 2012.

InfiniLED is taking to the marketplace a new generation of light emitting diode (LED) technology which was invented and developed at Tyndall.  It produces more usable light with less electric power than conventional LEDs and will extend the battery life for portable devices such as cameras, mobile phones and laptops by up to six times.  It also has a wide range of other applications such as medical and analytical instrumentation and direct-write, high precision printing.”

The Micro LED technology was invented by a team of researchers led by Mr Brian Corbett at Tyndall National Institute, supported and funded by Enterprise Ireland. Serial-entrepreneur Joe O’Keeffe, who has already spun out other successful companies, evaluated the commercial potential of the micro LED under the Enterprise Ireland Business Partners Programme.  This led to the establishment of InfiniLED Limited and today’s win.

“This is an excellent example of a successful collaboration between the researchers, Dr Anthony Morrissey of UCC’s Technology Transfer Office, and external entrepreneurs. We are delighted that Dr Bill Henry, who as a Tyndall employee worked on indentifying commercial opportunities for the technology, has now joined InfiniLED as Chief Commercial Officer. InfiniLED continues to access our facilities and expertise in the further development of the Micro LED technology under an access agreement between InfiniLED and Tyndall” explained Professor Roger Whatmore, CEO Tyndall National Institute.
