Global Food Crisis Theme of UCC Conference
20.04.2011

The causes, context and consequences of the global financial crisis will be the focus for discussion at the 24th Annual Irish Accounting & Finance Association conference taking place at UCC on April 28th & 29th.
Some 140 Accounting & Finance academics from Ireland, the UK, Continental Europe and the US are expected to participate in the programme. Over 50 presentations will be made by researchers on topics ranging from the executive mis-management in the Irish banking system, the impact of tax incentives on an economy to preparing business graduates for the rapidly changing environment in which they find themselves.

Speakers will include Professor Al Bhimani of the London School of Economics and Dr Constantin Gurdgiev, of the Institute for Business Value, IBM.  Professor Bhimani will deliver the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants address with a talk titled: “Globalisation and Technological Disruption: Implications for the Accounting Functiontalk”.  He will discuss the implications of globalisation and its effects as well as informational and technological changes in relation to management accounting practices.  “The argument will be made that disruptive forces have created novel challenges for the accounting function.  The global business environment is experiencing extensive economic and technological changes and is witnessing the rise of tighter and very extensive corporate governance regulatory shifts and deeper concerns with risk management intelligence.  The aftermath of the global recession combined with emerging technology based changes has also led to increased government regulation and intervention in organisational economic activities.  These forces have triggered a reshaping of management accounting and financial management practices. The address will examine the nature of these changes and how they are impacting  the accounting function in enterprises”, said Professor Bhimani.

Dr Constantin Gurdgiev’s will present a talk titled: “Staring at the future, but seeing the past: the ongoing transformation of Irish financial services. ” According to Dr Gurdgiev, “Global financial crisis is acting as a catalyst for profound changes in global financial services. Driven by changes in regulatory environments, re-adjustment of customer behavior to new risk-return realities, and rising competitive pressures from the new geographies, traditional banking and investment markets models are undergoing rapid transformation toward new, analytically and behaviorally-driven business models and strategies. At the same time, caught in the immediate maelstrom of the twin liquidity and solvency crises, Irish financial services providers are falling behind the wave of innovation sweeping the world around them. Four years into the crisis, it is now painfully clear that Irish financial services will have to undergo a much more radical transformation in years to come to catch up with their global peers - a path we are yet to imagine, let alone to embark upon.”

Steve O’Callaghan, lecturer in Corporate Finance at UCC and conference organiser said “UCC is delighted to host this conference,  these events are particularly important at a time when promoting an understanding of these issues is so critical to Ireland’s future.”

UCC has a vibrant Accounting & Finance group with an active research agenda and offers degrees in Accounting and in Finance as well as a range of Masters and other post graduate programmes. Academics from UCC will present 14 research papers over the course of the two-day conference.
