Eli Lilly Postgraduate Scholarship in Biotechnology

The Annual Eli Lilly Postgraduate Scholarship for Academic Excellence was recently awarded to MSc Biotechnology student, Sandra O’Shea (BSc Biochemistry, MSc Biotechnology). Mr Charlie Doolan, Senior Personnel Representative at Eli Lilly and Dr Tomas O’Riordan, Eli Lilly were among those present at a reception hosted by the UCC Biochemistry & Biotechnology Society.

Eli Lilly also participates in UCC Biotechnology student education and curriculum development through the provision of tours of the Eli Lilly Biotechnology Manufacturing Facility, Kinsale, MSc Biotechnology student placement and guest lectures in Biotechnology.  Co-ordinated this year by Brenda Nestor, Careers Service, UCC, a number of UCC students, especially from programmes in Biotechnology, Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds, and Process and Chemical Engineering, have benefitted from placement in Eli Lilly, and many UCC graduates have been employed by Eli Lilly.

Eli Lilly and UCC have several partnerships that include the annual Eli Lilly Postgraduate Research Symposium in Organic & Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In addition, undergraduate students have had the opportunity to visit Eli Lilly laboratories as partof its outreach programme and Lilly staff has contributed to guest lectures on numerous occasions.

Dr Justin McCarthy, Director of the Biotechnology Programme at UCC expressed the appreciation of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science and Masters in Biotechnology Programme for the continuing partnership with Eli Lilly and other industries and looked forward to further developments in the future.
