Bringing PhD research in UCC to life!
12.12.2011

What does the link between social class and education, neo-pagan Irish culture, French perceptions of Ireland and the ways in which bacteria can benefit plants have in common? They are all topics currently being studied by Doctoral research students at UCC, and anyone can now read about this research in lively and highly accessible articles prepared by these young scholars sharing their passion about their subject in The Boolean, UCC’s doctoral student journal.

Every year, UCC PhD students publish books, theses and papers sharing the outputs of their research with peers in their academic disciplines, covering fields from medicine to climate change, and from law to food. However, the language used for scholarly communication is usually not happily understood by the interested non-expert so, while the outputs of the work may be of interest and significance, there are few opportunities for them to learn about the work.

To bridge this gap, UCC introduced this new journal, The Boolean: Snapshots of Doctoral Research in University College Cork, and its second volume has just been launched, and can be read at http://theboolean.ucc.ie This journal was specifically designed to bring the research of the doctoral students to a much wider audience, and the first volume, following its online publication in late 2010, has been accessed and read widely all over the world. The authors of the papers in The Boolean were challenged to communicate their research through short articles which are accessible to the widest possible non-specialist audience. The articles describeresearchin a wide range of disciplines in a highly accessible style, and bring the students’ research to life in a way which is intended to be understandable and informative to anyone with an interest in the research topics described.

According to Professor Alan Kelly, Dean of Graduate Studies, UCC: “There is no doubt that a key skill for the modern researcher today is communication, and not just with the academic and scholarly communities in the relevant disciplines. Instead, researchers must be able to communicate their research and its significance to a wide range of stakeholders, from those for whom the research has direct impact to those who are just curious to learn more about what happens in our universities.”

There are currently in excess of 3000 postgraduate students in UCC with over 1000 doctoral students undertaking research across all four colleges: Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences; Business and Law; Medicine and Health and Science, Engineering & Food Science.
