For the second year in a row, Coláiste Chríost Rí were the overall winners of the National Elec Engineering Quiz that took place simultaneously in UCC, Waterford IT and Galway-Mayo IT on January 22nd 2011. UCC, who have championed this National Quiz, celebrated the 10th Anniversary of an Elec Eng Quiz held in UCC. This is the fifth year that the event has run nationally. All teams from the simultaneous events competed for the national title and national prize worth €1,000 donated by MIDAS Ireland to the winning school. Teams from Cork have won the overall national title three times in the last four years; CBC Cork in 2007, and Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh in 2008. De la Salle, Waterford won the national title in 2009, and the 2010 national winners were Coláiste Chríost Rí.

There was also an additional €2,500 worth of prizes presented in UCC on the day and, as regional winners, the fifth year students from Coláiste Chríost Rí each received a netbook (eMachines EM350), kindly sponsored by the Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA).  A local tie-break saw the team from Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk take second place from Hamillton High School. Second and third prizes were sponsored by ESBI.  Additional prizes were sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UCC including the prize to the highest placed team of fifth year students who didn’t qualify for a main prize. This was won by St Colman’s College, Fermoy.

The quiz is open to fifth and sixth year students studying honours maths, with a team of four students participating from each school. The students’ knowledge is tested in Engineering & Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.  The event aims to encourage interest amongst students considering CK605 Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCC with many of the students indicating this as their career choice in their CAO applications.
