Walkers hope to raise €100,000 for cancer research
29.07.2010

Up to 300 walkers, from counties around Ireland as well as overseas participated in a three day walk to make a positive impact on cancer – to raise €100,000 for cancer research programmes to continue at Cork Cancer Research Centre at UCC.

Spectacular mountain landscapes, dramatic peaks and glens, wild moorlands, wooded paths and lakes awaited those who trekked the 71km route along the Kerry Way and Beara Way.

Pat Spillane who led out the walkers Friday morning for the Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk 2010 commented: “There are still too many people, family, friends and fellow players, who are affected by cancer.  The research this walk supports is the kind of cutting edge research that will change that.  Having heard about the work of the Cork Cancer Research Centre, I am thrilled to join these trails and raise vital funds for their work”.  “The Kerry Way provides a spectacular setting for this fun event and the three routes for 2010 are both stunning and challenging.”

Despite some blistered feet and much physical exertion; the walkers were delighted with their participation and rising to the challenge of some tough climbs and many miles of walking. The camaraderie and friendships that were struck up during the three-day event make it one to be remembered and repeated in future years. The format of the Walk allows walkers opportunities to get to know their fellow walkers.  With eight groups containing up to 35 walkers per group (two leaders per group) and group names such as Red Arrows, Silver Bullets and Pink Panthers… walk leaders ensured their groups bond very quickly, with much craic had by all involved, as they guided and motivated each other along steep ascents and descents; and partied at the ‘All Star Awards’ at The Brook Lane Hotel on Saturday night.

Uniquely 100% of all sponsorship collected by walkers goes directly towards cancer research.  All walkers cover their own costs; event organisation and marketing costs are kept to a minimum and are covered by other fundraising activities leading up to the event. Without the assistance of the walkers, organising committee members, walk leaders, ground crew and supporting companies, this event wouldn’t take place and it would not be possible to raise vital funds for cancer research and impact the lives of those affected by cancer.

Full details regarding how much money has been raised through this event won’t be known until end of September 2010.  If you would like to make a difference in the fight against cancer and contribute to the researchers vital work, donations are gratefully received and can be lodged into The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk account – AIB Bank, Sort Code: 93-01-21, Account No: 01302795.   For further information, please contact Orla, Helena or Ann on 021 490 1437.
