Viking Studies in UCC
23.03.2010

This week sees the launch of The Viking Age: Ireland and the West, edited by John Sheehan (Department of Archaeology) and Donnchadh Ó Corráin (Emeritus Professor Medieval History). Arising from the XVth International Viking Congress, which took place in UCC, this publication may be regarded as a quinquennial review of Viking Studies by its leading proponents.

UCC contributors include: Donnchadh Ó Corráin and Emer Purcell (History), Elizabeth Wincott Heckett, Barra Ó Donnabháin, John Sheehan, and Tomás Ó Carragáin (Archaeology), and Patrick Wallace (Director, National Musuem of Ireland and Adjunct Professor of Archaeology, UCC). The launch, by Professor James Graham-Campbell, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at University College London, will take place on March 26th at an international conference titled Viking Woodstsown and Hiberno-Norse Waterford, in Waterford. Meanwhile, Emer Purcell will showcase the book at a concurrent conference, New Directions in Scandinavian Studies, at Fordham University, New York.

Viking studies is vibrant in UCC according to John Sheehan, with members of the history and archaeology departments currently active in a number of international research projects; including Genes of Gallgoídil: migration of Irish, Hiberno-Norse and other Gaelic-speaking populations in the Viking-Age; the North Atlantic Material Culture Project, and Making the Faroes Project.
