UCC Sporting Successes

Congratulations to UCC students and graduates who continue to succeed in their chosen sport.

Athletics:
UCC graduate, Ailis McSweeney recently broke the 32 year old Irish 100m record and in doing so qualified for the European Championships taking place in Barcelona this week.  Ailish succeeded in qualifying for the semi-final of 100m at Barcelona and narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Brian Murphy, another UCC graduate, is also part of the Irish squad. He is a member of the 4 x 400m relay squad.

Ladies Hockey:
Miriam Crowley received her first Senior Cap for the Irish Senior Team when she competed for Ireland in an invitational tournament in Scotland last week-end (July 24th/25th). Miriam was joined on this trip by her UCC team mate Audrey O’Flynn and becomes the third UCC player to be capped at senior level this year along with Audrey O’Flynn and Julia O’Halloran.

Kick boxing/Tae Kwon Do (TWD):
Conni Vaughan came 3rd in the recent ITF World TWD Championships held in Korea. She also came home with two medals from the Korean Open held shortly before the World Championships.
Andrea Kinsella and Christian Spagnol also competed with Christian winning a bronze medal.
UCC graduate, Diarmuid Mac Suibhne was also part of the Irish team at this event.  Diarmuid won two medals at the Korean Open.
Master Norman Creedon, coach to the UCC TWD Club was awarded an 8th Dan at the Championships. He now holds the highest ranked Dan in Ireland. Master Creedon was also coach to the Irish team at the Championships.

Golf:
Ian O’Rourke is part of the Munster Senior Golf Team.  Ian has just completed First Year in UCC.  UCC graduate, Gillian O’Leary was a member of the Munster Senior Inter Pros team which competed in the Women’s Inter Pros.

Table Tennis:
Joe Kelleher, was part of the Munster U21 team which came 2nd at the Interprovincial Championships recently.

GAA:
UCC Students and Graduates are busy representing their respective counties in the All Ireland Series at present in Gaelic Football, Camogie, Hurling, and Ladies Gaelic Football.

Rowing:
Justin Ryan, who has just completed first year won a silver medal at the World U23 Rowing Championships held in Belarus.  Justin competed in the Lightweight Men’s Quadruple Sculls and finished one second behind the winners Germany.

Chess:
Alex Lopez, a Law student, is the new Irish National Chess Champion.

Equestrian:
Brian Morrison, another who has just completed first year in UCC, will compete for Ireland in the Young Rider European Three Day Event Championship from July 30th-August 1st in Pardubice, Czech Republic.
