UCC reports strong growth in research commercialisation performance
29.03.2010

UCC’s Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) has announced strong growth in commercialisation activity for 2009. The findings are published in a Report released today (March 29th 2010) by the OTT, the office responsible for commercialising UCC’s research based Intellectual Property.

During 2009, a total of 75 invention disclosures were made by UCC researchers to the Office, a 75% increase since the office was established 3 years ago. At the other end of the’ invention-to-market‘ pipeline, 4 companies were spun out and 14 licences were executed. One of these licensee companies, Luxcel Biosciences (a 2002 UCC spin out) received a strategic investment of €2.5m from a US industry leader.

Full details of the report can be viewed at http://www.ucc.ie/research/techtransfer/

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy welcomed the results as providing evidence of the University’s strategic focus on translating knowledge creation into economic return.  “UCC has prioritised certain actions to strengthen economic output, deliver greater value for money and support the government’s framework for economic renewal. One of the keys to success is to drive the commercialisation of research and technology transfer through mechanisms such as licensing, patents, creating spin out companies and supporting external start ups. These excellent results show that our strategies are working.”

Commenting on the results, the Director of the Office of Technology Transfer, Brendan Cremen pointed to the increase in the number of licences to the Irish SME sector.  “We are delighted with our performance in 2009, particularly in two areas: 4 companies were set up, based on UCC Intellectual Property and we executed a record number of licences. It is encouraging to see a rise in the number of our licences to Irish SMEs. There were 2 such licences in 2007, 9 in 2008 and 10 in 2009. It provides further evidence of our support of the regional innovation agenda. We will continue to provide support to these licensees to support their growth and success.”

In recognition of UCC’s successful achievements in commercialising its research in 2009, the office is hosting UCC’s 1st annual Research Commercialisation Awards on April 27th 2010 at the Western Gateway Building. The ceremony will be opened by the President of UCC. For more information on the event please go to: http://www.ucc.ie/research/techtransfer/news.html
