UCC Project receives €80,000
27.08.2010

UCC’s Disability Support Service has been awarded €80,000 from the Genio Trust to develop a peer-led mentor programme for students with mental health difficulties.

Genio is a non profit organisation which aims to accelerate the availability of proven, cost effective, personalised supports, enabling people with disabilities and mental health difficulties at risk of social exclusion, to lead full lives. The UCC project was one of 35 initiatives awarded funding out of 383 submissions received nationally.

The objective of the project is to design, implement and evaluate a specific peer-led training programme for students with mental health difficulties. The project builds on the objectives set out in the UCC Mental Health Policy Document and aims to develop the capacity of students with mental health difficulties to fully achieve their academic, social and personal potential.

The project will liaise with appropriate student support services, external professionals in the field of mental health and Dublin City University who were also awarded funding through Genio.

This innovative proposal was developed by Diarmuid Ring, Peer Advocate for people with mental health difficulties, and Mary O Grady, Disability Support Officer. Diarmuid is a well recognised national figure in promoting advocacy and peer support for people with mental health difficulties.
