The University, placed at 184 in the rankings compared to 207 last year, is now amongst the top two per cent of universities worldwide.
“It is a credit to the University as a whole and to our researchers in particular, that we have made such a significant improvement in the world rankings. This does not happen by accident. It takes hard work and dedication on the part of the entire UCC staff to ensure that the University continues to have such a high regional, national and international profile, one consistent with the standards we set for ourselves and with our ambition always to be better,” Dr Murphy said.
This year’s placing shows a consistent trend in the upward progress of UCC through the world rankings. In 2006, the University was ranked 386th in the world, the following year, UCC’s position improved by 100 places and in 2008, the University was ranked 226th in the world. Last year, UCC climbed to 207th in the rankings, and this year, the improved performance has seen the University jump by 23 places to 184th in the world.
The student body at University College Cork now totals almost 20,000 and some 2,800 overseas students are on campus.
