UCC celebrates Fleischmann centenary
20.04.2010

An exhibition to celebrate the centenary of Aloys Fleischmann, Professor of Music at UCC has opened in the Boole Library.

On display for the first time are archival items from the Aloys Fleischmann collection:

  • his lecture notes
  • his personal notes on the hugely significant research project  Sources of Irish Traditional Music
  • correspondence between Fleischmann and the college authorities about the administration of the Music Department
  • musical manuscripts from composers with additions by Fleischmann.

Also on display are items from Fleischmann’s time as a student at UCC including a scholarship essay from 1927, his results in his Irish music examination 1928 and a handwritten letter from 1927 congratulating him on getting four firsts in his exams.

Archival items from the university’s own administrative collections relating to the development of the teaching of music as well as the establishment of cultural societies within the college can also be seen and recordings of Fleischmann’s own compositions are available to listen to on CD.

The themes running through the exhibition focus on:

  • Fleischmann’s dedication to teaching and developing the Music Department in UCC
  • his deep interest in the Gaelic heritage
  • his fostering of national and international connections through the establishment of the International Cork Choral Festival and especially the introduction in the 1960s of the Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music

The exhibition will run until the end of May and is available to view in the Boole Library, UCC.
