UCC’s Computer Science Department continued its highly successful IT Experience Programme for Transition Year students with its latest offering which ran from 22nd to 26th November, 2010.
Twenty Transition Year students drawn from schools in Cork city and county, including Castletownbere and Schull, and Waterford participated in the programme which took place in UCC’s Western Gateway Building. A second course is set to run in February 2011.

The aim of the programme is to give interested TY students work experience and the knowledge needed to make an informed decision on considering a career in Computer Science.

"The TY course has become hugely successful.  Some 40 schools will participate in the course 2010/2011, with another 20 schools on a waiting list." says Margot Holland School Liaison Officer, Computer Science. This has been due in part to a much closer working relationship with schools over the last two years, combined with the hi-tech IT facilities at the Western Gateway Building.

The programme included: systems administration, disaster recovery, hardware, designing a web page and programming skills, as well as presentations on careers, admission to university, and Computer Science in general. The Department has also commenced a new half-day interactive workshop and tour of the Computer Science facilities.  The workshop was initially run as part of Science Week 2010 but has become one of the services offered to schools on an ongoing basis.
