The Changing Face of Development

The changing face of development is the theme of a seminar organised by the Department of Food Business & Development taking place in UCC on Friday November 5th from 12-5pm.

The event will take place in Áras na Mac Léinn/Student Centre at UCC and will be attended by Mr Billy Kelleher, TD, Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr Tom Arnold, CEO Concern, and H.E. Ms Catherine Muigai Mwangi the Kenyan ambassador. The event will be opened by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy.

Students of UCC’s BSc in International Development and Food Policy undertake a 6-month developing world internship in the third year of their degree programme.  This afternoon seminar will highlight the students’ work with a diverse range of organisations including Action Lesotho, Africa Direct, Concern, CPALI, Edith Wilkins Street Children Foundation, Gorta, Hope Foundation, Self Help Africa and Trócaire. Students worked with these organisations in a number of developing countries including Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Lesotho, Kenya, Madagascar, Palestine, Uganda and Zambia.

The seminar showcases the work of the students, who will form the next generation of Irish development professionals. It will afford an insight into their experiences of the opportunities and challenges now facing development practitioners.

The opening address will be given by Mr Billy Kelleher, TD, Minister for Trade and Commerce. The Main Session will focus on detailed Presentations by the students under the topic, “The changing face of development”, specifically on the four themes of Agriculture & Food Security, Health & Nutrition, Conservation & the Environment, Human Rights & Children’s rights. Mr Tom Arnold, CEO Concern, will also give a keynote address on global development challenges.
