Targeting Ireland’s Ambitious Emission Reduction
11.11.2010

The first set of results on Ireland’s future energy technology mix to meet long-term climate change targets will be presented at an international conference in UCC on November 15th 2010.

Dr Brian Ó Gallachóir of UCC’s Environmental Research Institute will present the first results from an energy modelling research project on Ireland’s long-term energy future. Ireland is currently legislating for an ambitious target for the period to 2050 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% below 1990 levels. The research centres on whether this can be achieved, what energy technology options can best meet this goal and what will the cost will be.

“The results show that meeting this ambitious target requires a radical change in Ireland’s energy system, with huge efficiency improvements and renewable energy growth”, said Dr Ó Gallachóir.

The conference, titled “Energy Systems Modelling Addressing Energy Security and Climate Change” is being hosted jointly between UCC and the International Energy Agency.

Mr Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will deliver a keynote address. Results will be presented on energy systems solutions at a global level, the best way forward for the European Union.

The conference will take place on Monday, November 15th 2010 in DeVere Hall, UCC.
