The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Conor Lenihan TD, has announced Professor Jean-Pierre Colinge of Tyndall National Institute, UCC, as winner of Science Foundation Ireland's 'Researcher of the Year 2010' accolade.

Minister Lenihan made the announcement on November 15th 2010 in a keynote address to the SFI Science Summit, a two-day conference in Athlone attended by over 300 people including Ireland's leading scientific researchers, EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, and leading industry figures.

Announcing the award, Minister Lenihan said "Professor Jean-Pierre Colinge is a recognised pioneering figure in the area of semiconductor research and has achieved exceptional scientific research outputs in this field over two decades. During a distinguished career in mainland Europe for many years he has published over 360 scientific papers and several books, and he chose to relocate to Ireland to further his research activities. Currently Professor at the Tyndall National Institute in UCC, Jean-Pierre heads up the Micro-Nano Electronics Centre at the Institute and was recently published in the renowned international journal ‘Nature Nanotechnology’ for his work on fabricating the world's first ever junctionless transistor. In addition to his work at Tyndall, Jean-Pierre has been formidable exponent of Irish-based science activity.  In recent months, he has presented his ground-breaking work to international audiences at the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO) in Moscow and to the SFI-IDA ‘Ireland R&D Showcase’ held earlier this month at Stanford University, California.”
