Postgraduate Students Showcase UCC Research
23.06.2010

‘A Closer Look at Science’ is the title of a new series of articles to be published in the Evening Echo weekly for the next eight weeks. Beginning tomorrow (June 24th 2010), each article will be written by a UCC College of Science, Engineering & Food Science (SEFS) postgraduate student describing his/her PhD research in layman’s language.

The eight postgraduate student authors were all finalists in the College of SEFS Science for All Postgraduate Student Public Presentation Competition, part of an Outreach Communication course designed to train and encourage postgraduate students to communicate effectively with non-specialist audiences.  The areas of research that will be highlighted include: Combating Listeriosis Food Poisoning, (Microbiology Department); Harnessing Wave Energy, (Civil Engineering Dept.); Developing Swiss-type cheese in Ireland, (Food Science Dept.); Theoretical Physics research that will help to develop Quantum Computers, (Physics Department); Invention of New Transisters that will revolutionise the electronics industry, and exciting new research that will vastly improve the speed and capacity of the Internet, (Tyndall National Institute); Fundamental Mathematical research on random motion, (School of Mathematics).

This exciting and innovative new liaison with The Evening Echo was organised at the UCC end by Professor William Reville, SEFS Public Awareness of Science Officer.   Commenting on the upcoming series of articles, Professor Reville said: “This gives our students a wonderful opportunity to hone their communication skills and also to show the general public the very valuable research that their tax Euros support at UCC – research that is  vitally important to developing the new smart economy”.
