The second Molecular Medicine Ireland (MMI) Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme (CSFP) Annual Meeting takes place today Friday, June 25th at UCC.

The objective of the CSFP is to train the next generation of clinician scientists with the unique and specialised knowledge essential to fulfil Ireland’s research needs in translational medicine. The CSFP is funded by the Irish Government under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions cycle 4. Fellows from five institutions with a shared agenda in clinical and translational research are participating in the Programme, which is being coordinated by Molecular Medicine Ireland.

This programme transcends institutional boundaries and provides systematic training for this group of clinician researchers through a structured PhD programme. 22 MMI Fellows have been appointed to date.

The CSFP Annual Meeting gathered key individuals involved in this MMI programme, including the Fellows’ supervisors. Dr Michael Murphy, President for UCC, welcomed the delegates to the annual meeting. The MMI Fellows presented their research as short talks and a judging panel awarded a MMI medal for best presentation.

A highlight of the day is the Keynote Lecture delivered by Professor David H Dockrell (Wellcome Senior Clinical Fellow, University of Sheffield).

Professor David Kerins, Dean of the School of Medicine & Vice Head College of Medicine and Health at UCC, commented that “the Annual Meeting is an excellent opportunity for MMI Clinician Scientist Fellows based in five academic institutions to present their research, which is at the forefront of improving disease diagnosis and treatment. We are delighted to welcome MMI Fellows from NUI Galway, RCSI, TCD and UCD to join with those based in UCC in contributing to this very successful day.”

The Annual Meeting was preceded by 4 days of Structured Training at UCC organised by Dr Geraldine Boylan, School of Medicine and Professor Helen Whelton, Dean, Graduate School, College of Medicine & Health which brought the MMI Fellows together for education modules covering innovation, commercialisation and career management and leadership in academic medicine.
