To celebrate this milestone, and to acknowledge the contribution made by staff and students across the University to the development of graduate education at UCC, a reception was organised by UCC’s Graduate Studies Office in the Aula Maxima for students, supervisors and support staff.
Dr Michael Murphy, President, paid tribute to the personal and academic accomplishments of UCC’s doctoral students. The President also announced a new UCC PhD showcase day, to be held in June, which will highlight the achievements of doctoral students across the university and provide students with a unique opportunity to present their own research and to gain a broader perspective on the research being undertaken across other disciplines.
Professor Alan Kelly, Dean of Graduate Studies, acknowledged the key contribution made by academic staff. "Supervisors from almost all academic unit have taken PhD students under their wings, and engaged in sharing their enthusiasm for knowledge and research with them, mentoring and guiding them through to the highest degree we offer", Professor Kelly noted.
The many changes taking place in graduate education at UCC were also noted, including the introduction of structured PhD programmes and generic and transferable skills modules, and enhanced support services for research students. It was commented that UCC has achieved many of the national goals of 4th-Level Ireland.
Pictured celebrating the announcement of 1,000 registered PhD students at UCC were: Natasha Underhill, PhD student, Department of Government, Professor Alan Kelly, Dean of Graduate Studies and Markus Belz, PhD student, School of Food & Nutritional Sciences, UCC.
