Irish Journal of Sociology Launch
10.06.2010

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy launched the Irish Journal of Sociology (IJS) at the university on June 8th 2010.

The launch marked the publication of two new editions of the journal published by Manchester University Press (MUP), volume 17/1 (an edition which contains articles on a range of topics, including Chinese migrants, the role of technology in the household, gender and youth, children’s involvement in housework and an analysis of social partnership) and volume 17/2 (a special issue on Health).

The Irish Journal of Sociology, the journal of the Sociological Association of Ireland (www.sociology.ie), is currently located in Sociology at UCC. The editorial team includes: Dr Linda Connolly (General Editor and Managing Editor, IJS), Dr Kathy Glavanis-Grantham (General Editor, IJS), Dr Niamh Hourigan (General Editor, IJS), Dr Tracey Skillington (General Editor, IJS), Paula Meaney (Book Review Editor, IJS), Aifric O Gráda (Assistant Editor, IJS)

The editorial team recently announced that a publishing contract for the journal was secured with Manchester University Press and the first edition with Manchester vol. 17/1, which was published in 2009, as well as vol. 17.2 (a special issue on Health) have just become available on-line at www.ingentaconnect.com   “In working to secure this contract with a prominent international publisher and an on-line link with Ingenta, the UCC editors have taken the Irish Journal Sociology into the arena of international research dissemination and public debate”, said Dr Linda Connolly, General Editor and Managing Editor, IJS.

The journal is the peer-reviewed journal of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI). Founded in 1991, it aims to publish original high quality articles of interest to an international sociological audience while also remaining a forum for material that is directly engaged with Irish society. Over the last 19 years, the IJS has gradually carved out a distinctive space in the field of sociological inquiry and continues to show a fundamental commitment to empirical research and theoretically informed work with an innovative edge.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Murphy warmly congratulated the editors on the MUP editions and said that the IJS provides the Department of Sociology with an opportunity to publicly acknowledge its own achievements as a department with diverse sociological interests but with a deep and well-entrenched commitment to research and publication.

The journal welcomes articles which make a contribution to theoretical and empirical research on topics of contemporary interest, such as democracy, citizenship, globalization, gender, class, religion, media, crime, ethnicity, migration, family, sexualities, development, health, community, environment, knowledge, identity, social movements, and various processes of social change.
