Professor Kennedy-Pipe is the daughter of Irish parents who settled near Oxford. She is regarded as ‘one of the UK’s leading experts on war’, according to The Guardian, and she is a leading figure in the field of International Relations (IR). Professor Kennedy-Pipe is President of the British International Studies Association (BISA) and Professor of War Studies and Director of the Centre for War Studies in the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Hull.
She researches contemporary war, terrorists’ motivations, the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and on how combat affects women. Kennedy-Pipe has published numerous key articles on these topics in top flight international journals and several monographs. She has also conducted policy work for both the UK and US governments.
Professor Kennedy-Pipe adopts an interdisciplinary approach reflecting her background in history, Strategic Studies and IR. Her research project on the use of Improvised Explosive Devices involves partnership with psychologists at Penn State University in the US. This integrated approach accords with the style of both the long running MA in IR of the School of History, and the interdisciplinary MA in Politics (History, Government and Philosophy).
Professor Kennedy-Pipe was formerly Professor of IR & War Studies at the University of Warwick (2007-8), Professor of IR at the University of Sheffield (2001-7) and, before that, Reader in Politics at the University of Durham. Her research interests lie in IR, International Security, Terrorism and Political Violence, International History, Women and War, and the origins of major wars. Some of Professor Kennedy-Pipe’s monographs include: The Origins of the Cold War (Palgrave, 2007); and Russia and the World (Edward Arnold, 1998). She was also a longstanding member of the editorial board of the world leading Cambridge Studies in International Relations series.
