A team comprising four students from the BSc Accounting and BSc Finance programmes at UCC has won the Irish final of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge.

The Challenge is an international business competition, with the UCC team now representing Ireland at the global final  on August 5-6th at Taylors University College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The UCC team will compete against other international teams including representatives from Australia, UK, Hong Kong and China.

The competition is designed to test the business management skills of participants.  Teams from each of the 12 third-level institutes competing were initially provided with a CIMA case study describing Dizz, a multi-national telecommunications organisation.  Teams are required to analyse this information in advance and conduct research into the general business context and markets in which the case is set.  On the day of the competition, teams respond to a number of previously unseen events.  Within a three-hour timeframe, they are expected to assimilate the additional information, prepare and deliver a 15-minute presentation of their recommendations to a panel of adjudicators and participate in a subsequent question and answer session with the panel.

Professor Ciaran Murphy, Head, Department of Accounting, Finance & Information Systems in congratulating the students has affirmed how “the team’s success demonstrates the quality of management accounting programmes taught at UCC, reflective of the combination of technical financial management competences with the development of key presentation and communication skills required of business graduates today.”
