From UCC to China
17.06.2010

The School of Asian Studies and the Confucius Institute at UCC bade farewell to BA and BComm second year students who are heading to China for a year’s study in Shanghai and Guangzhou.

This is the first time such a large number of UCC students have been awarded Chinese scholarships. It demonstrates the development of Sino-Irish relations and the close links between the two countries. Among the 22 BA and BComm students who will travel to China, 15 have been awarded the Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) and the China Government Scholarship (CSC). The scholarships will cover the tuition fee and their living expenses during their study in China.

Mr Michael Kelly, Chairman of the Higher Education Authority, commented: “This is a remarkable level of achievement by UCC and its students and also reflects a strong commitment by China to students coming from Ireland. It is also very positive that we have such a number of students interested in and committed to completing some of their studies in China”.

Two fourth year BA students from the School of Asian Studies have also been awarded the China Government Scholarship (CSC). They will study in Shanghai for four years to pursue Master Degrees in Chinese Literature and Language.

UCC offers four year BA and BComm programmes in Chinese Studies. After studying at UCC for their first two years, students spend a year studying at one of UCC's partner universities in China before returning to complete their final year in Cork.
