Envisioning Christ on the Cross’ Conference
01.04.2010

Speakers from as far afield as Australia, the USA and Canada gathered with European counterparts from Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK at UCC earlier this week. The conference was titled ‘Croch Saithir: Envisioning Christ on the Cross in the Early Medieval West’.

The organisers of the conference, Dr Juliet Mullins and Dr Richard Hawtree (School of English), and Dr Jenifer Ní Ghrádaigh (History of Art), expressed their pleasure at the success of the conference.  "Scholars of medieval imagery are sometimes confined by national boundaries" explained Dr Ní Ghrádaigh, "and what made our conference special was that we were able to bring together those working on the same theme across different cultures, while also placing the Irish and Insular contribution at its core."  Plenary speakers included UCC’s Dr Jennifer O’Reilly, Professor Celia Chazelle (College of New Jersey) and Professor Louis van Tongeren (Tilburg University), while other speakers included Professor Richard Marks (Cambridge), Dr Michele Bacci (Siena) and Dr César García de Castro Valdés (Patrimonio Cultural del Principado de Asturias).  The proceedings of the conference will be forthcoming in an edited volume.

Further information on the project may be found on the project homepage at http://www.christonthecross.org/
