Decision-Making in the Health Care Sector

How can economic decision-making be applied in the health care sector? University College Cork is inviting applications for The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economic Practice which is designed to give students a knowledge and understanding of how economic decision-making can be applied in the health area.

This innovative programme, run by UCC’s Department of Economics, will commence in September 2010.  The programme is aimed at health sector practitioners, professions and graduates thereof. In addition, business or economics graduates with an interest in diverging to the health care sector would be considered.

The taught programme is available to study on a full-time or part-time basis, which facilitates health sector practitioners and professionals who wish to up-skill while continuing to work.

This is a distinctive, practice based programme, which enables participants to translate relevant economic skills, techniques, thinking and understanding to the health care sector.

The External Programme Advisor is Mr Larry Bane, former Assistant National Director HR with the HSE, who said: “At a time of scarce resources, this programme is very timely.  Choices have to be made in the health sector and this programme gives people the knowledge and skills to make better choices.”

Students who successfully complete the programme have the option of transferring their registration to the MA Health Economic Practice.  This programme involves a six-month work placement and associated research.

Programme Director, Brian Turner, said: “The option to transfer to the MA programme gives students the opportunity to apply the decision-making tools they learn during the taught element of the programme to the health sector in a real-world situation.  This experience should prove invaluable to those seeking a job in the health sector or to those wishing to progress their careers in the sector.”

A Bridging Programme will be provided for applicants for the Postgraduate Diploma who have not previously studied economics.

The closing date for receipt of applications on www.ucc.ie/apply is April 1st 2010.  Further details on the programme can be obtained by contacting the Programme Directors, Aileen Murphy and Brian Turner, at the Department of Economics, UCC; Aileen.Murphy@ucc.ie or B.Turner@ucc.ie
