The Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (CCJHR) at UCC will host its fourth annual criminal law conference on Friday next, June 11th.

Titled: “Accommodating Victims in the Criminal Justice System: An Inclusionary or Punitive Logic?”, the aim of the conference is to update delegates on current debates in criminal justice with particular emphasis on the role of crime. 

Speakers will include Mr Justice Paul Carney, adjunct Professor of Law at UCC; James Hamilton, Director of Public Prosecutions and Blaise O’Carroll SC.  Mr Justice Paul Carney will commence the morning session, chaired by solicitor, Mr Frank Buttimer, with a talk titled “Victims of Crime and the Trial Process” followed by Mr James Hamilton who will discuss “Victims of Crime and the Prosecutor”.  Blaise O’Carroll, SC will focus on “The Criminal Justice System, Itself, a Victim?” “Rape and the Limits of the Criminal Justice System” will be discussed by Mr Conor Hanly, NUIG, Lead Researcher on the Rape and Justice in Ireland Project.

The afternoon session will be chaired by Dr David Riordan, Judge of the District Court.  Among the speakers will be Dr Shane Kilcommins, of UCC’s Faculty of Law and Co-Director of CCJHR who will discuss “The needs and concerns of victims of crime: a project under for the Commission for the Support of Victims of Crime”. Ms Patricia Brazil, Trinity College Dublin will present a talk titled: “Report on Services and Legislation for Victims of Crime”.
