Organised by Dr Melanie Marshall (UCC School of Music), Dr Paul Hegarty (Head of French at UCC), and Dr Christopher Morris (UCC School of Music), the interdisciplinary conference brings together fourteen researchers and musicians studying embodied musical experience. Speakers will consider the extent to which music contributes to the production of bodies that lie within or outside socially acceptable norms. In particular, the conference will highlight the social contexts of music production in relation to gender, race, space and time.
Professor Susan McClary is known for her provocative insights into music. On this occasion, she will discuss Claudio Monteverdi’s ‘Duo Seraphim’ from the famous Vespers of 1610, now in its 400th anniversary year, and its remarkably carnal simulation of spiritual beings.
Among the other presentations will be papers that address the dancing male body and the complexity of male sexuality, unacknowledged racial ideology of modern performance of Renaissance vocal music, historical European music, musical gestures, music as an out-of-body experience, the dynamic relationship between music, the body and normality, women’s use of the death growl vocal production technique in heavy metal, the paradox of embodiment in noise music performance, the experience of listening and the listening body, listening and the imagination, synaesthesia in film.
There will be two performances. Maria Christina Cleary performs works by Louis Spohr and Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz on an Egan, Irish-made double-action harp (circa 1824).* La Société des Amis du Crime will present a noise performance. The conference, part of the FUAIM Music at UCC series, is supported by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Conference Fund, UCC School of Music and UCC Department of French.
