BCRI launches 10 Gigabit research link between UCC and HEANET
05.05.2010

The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) is pleased to announce the establishment of a 10 Gigabit research link between UCC and HEANET.

This work is the first step in interconnecting the countrywide e-INIS data store which, when complete, will have over one petabyte of storage capacity.  The e-INIS project is collaboration between key national infrastructure providers and institutional participants: Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, The Irish Centre for High-End Computing, HEAnet, Grid-Ireland, National University of Ireland Galway, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and National University of Ireland Maynooth. In addition, the store will be connected to European partners through the EU-funded NEMO project.  In this role, the store will be used to manage data for the 13 participating international institutions.

The BCRI wish to thank the UCC Computer Centre for their assistance in making the link operational.

Notes:
1)  HEAnet provides high quality Internet Services to Irish Universities, Institutes of Technology and to the research and educational community. It plays an essential role in facilitating leading edge research involving national and international collaborations between Irish researchers and students and their colleagues across the globe.
2) E-INIS = e-Irish National Infra-Structure
3) NEMO is an EU FP7 funded project that will be the largest multicentered European study of neonatal seizures and their treatment. The project addresses the FP7 Health call ‘Adapting off-patent medicines to the specific needs of paediatric populations’ by investigating the safety and efficacy of bumetanide for the treatment of seizures in babies. Bumetanide is included in the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) revised priority list for studies into off-patent paediatric medicinal products.
It is coordinated in UCC by Dr Geraldine Boylan, School of Medicine
Nemo is derived from - Treatment of NEonatal seizures with Medication Off-patent: Evaluation of efficacy and safety of Bumetanide.
