Professor Przemysław Urbańczyk from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw will deliver a lecture titled "Who named Poland and the Poles"? Tuesday next, March 3rd at UCC.
Professor Urbańczyk's book Poland's Troubled Beginnings challenges many assumptions about the origins of Polish identity in its European context. The lecture will address these issues by looking at the origins of the name of Poland and the Poles.

He lectures and publishes on Polish and Central-European early medieval history and identity.  He has authored and edited over 250 publications, including the monographs: Medieval Arctic Norway, Power and Politics in the Early Middle Ages (translated into German), 1000: A Millennial Transcontinental Journey, Conquerors of the North Atlantic (translated into English), and Poland's Troubled Beginnings (published in 2007 and awarded the Klio prize in Poland for the best book on history in 2008).

Professor Urbańczyk's academic activities include membership of several international committees.  He also acts as an advisor on assessment panels at the European Science Foundation, the European Research Council, the Irish Heritage Council, the Humanities Serving Irish Society, and the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences.
