Exposure to Dangerous Chemicals, Drugs and Pollutants - UCC Public Lecture
26.02.2009

What do we know of the long-terms effects of exposure to dangerous chemicals? This is the subject that will be addressed at the next lecture of the Annual College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) Public Lecture Series at UCC by Professor James Heffron on Wednesday, March 4th at 8pm, Boole IV Lecture Theatre.
The human population is exposed to chemicals in the home, the workplace and during recreation.  Great concern is expressed when the population is exposed to dangerous chemicals such as the recent episodes of exposure to melamine, benzene, lead from toys, Sudan dyes and dioxins in foodstuffs.  While we know a great deal about the toxic actions of high levels of chemicals, our knowledge of long-term effects of low dose exposure is generally poor.  Current research in this area will be analysed by Professor Heffron in the lecture titled: “Toxicovigilance and Low Level Exposure to Potentially Dangerous Chemicals, Drugs and Pollutants.”

James Heffron obtained BSc and PhD degrees in Biochemistry from UCD and the DSc from the National University of Ireland (NUI).  He has carried out research and lecturing in the Mayo Clinic/Graduate School of Medicine, USA, University College London and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.  A professor in the Department of Biochemistry, UCC, he specialises in Biochemical Toxicology.  He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy.

The SEFS Annual Public Lecture Series is organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer, SEFS.  The series of lectures will run weekly until Wednesday, March 25th. Full details of the lectures can be consulted by visiting website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie/pages/SEFS_LectureSeries_2009.pdf

All the lectures will be filmed and the films will be posted on the UCC Public Understanding of Science website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie  The 2007 and 2008 Public Lectures are already posted on this website.

Admission to the lectures is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
