US Senior Attorney presents Seminar on Child Protection at UCC

UCC’s Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (CCJHR) will host a seminar on child protection today (Tuesday, March 24th 2009).  The seminar will take place from 12.45-2pm in Room 123, O’Rahilly Building.
The seminar titled: “1,000 calls every day: An Overview of the Child Abuse Hotline and Child Protection in New York State” will be presented by Kelleena Richards, Senior Attorney at the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Kelleena Richards works as a Senior Attorney at the New York State Office of Children and Family Services located in Albany, New York. Ms Richards' expertise is in the area of child abuse, neglect, fatalities and other child welfare related issues. In this capacity, one of her responsibilities is serving as legal adviser to the New York Statewide child abuse "hotline". In the past four years, Ms. Richards has assisted in the development of regulations and policies related to protecting children covered within the State's jurisdiction. She has reviewed the records of over 8,000 child abuse and neglect cases to determine if the findings should be upheld. Ms. Richards develops and participates in the training of other attorneys and program staff in the area of child abuse and neglect.
 
Prior to her employment with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Ms Richards worked for several years in the Family Court system where she practiced in the area of civil prosecution, enforcement and child protection. Some of the cases she brought to trial included the areas of child neglect, foster care and the termination of parental rights.
 
Ms. Richards is admitted to the New York State Bar and the Second Circuit Courts of the United States. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School in 1998. Ms. Richards graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Criminal Justice.
